‘Triple Vision’ 29.10.24 featuring Angus Mills Mix + Q&A

Joining ‘Triple Vision’ this month is Eora/Sydney-based DJ, producer, & Moonshoe Records affiliate Angus Mills. Known for his signature blend of ethereal textures, low-end frequencies, & hypnotic rhythms, Angus crafts a sound experience that feels equally at home in the club as it does in a more intimate, personal listening space.

Q&A with Angus Mills

Q1. Can you tell us about the mix you’ve curated for the show. Are there any themes, moods, or sonic threads that connect your selections and are there any artists/labels you're particularly vibing at the moment?

Hello Eric! Thanks so much for having me on the series :)

So the mix I’ve put together is a bit of a reflection of music I’ve been playing out recently in a few sets. Definitely more of a club focused mix which is where my head is at for the moment.

Q2. You recently scored an animation that was projected onto the Opera House as part of Vivid Festival in Sydney. How did this project come about, & what was the collaborative process like in bringing it to life?

Yes, what a great project to work on, huge shout of to Julia Gutman for getting me on board. It was very cool because I wrote about 12 pieces of music before there was any animation, just going off Julia’s initial concept for Echo. I sent the music to the animators and Julia and they were then able to select 3 of the songs and then started animating with the music as a bit of a reference point. We went back and forth for about 3-4 months and I developed the music iteratively as the animation developed, recording additional parts with Ben Freeman on Piano and Jack Doepel on Alto/Tenor Sax who both did an amazing job of improvising and composing their parts. Honestly such a cool project and amazingly we’ve been nominated for an APRA award for original music for screen, still very surreal.

Q3. When working in the studio on your own output, are there any processes, techniques or any pieces of hard/software that help guide your creative flow?

I’ve been writing/producing since about 2011 and really just enjoy experimenting with ideas and not trying to overthink the process. Generally I like to just get in the studio, maybe look for some kind sonic inspiration whether it be a synth or a sample or maybe some drums and then I just try and get into a bit of a flow state with layering instruments and sounds and see where it takes me. Re hardware/software, I use Ableton, I’ve got a bunch of synths and outboard fx, mostly rack mounted for the sake of space and then I use a keystep pro to sequence the synths and then into a SSL mixer where I like to run sends to various fx ie space echo, reverb and some other old 90’s early digital fx units.

Q4. What's something within a community you're a part of that you'd like people to know about?

Oh wow, too many things to list. I’ve been helping Jackson Fester/Cousin a little bit behind the scenes on his new 12” that’s coming out of Moonshoe Records soon and the tracks sound amazing, can’t wait for people to hear that. My parter Claudia Osborne is directing a show, Spring Awakening at NIDA at the moment which looks incredible from the photos I’ve seen so far, that opens November 6th and running til the 13th. Julia Gutman who I worked with on Vivid is installing her new work at AGWA in Perth which also looks so sick. Hugh Burridge who writes as Hugh B is recording his new record following on from the brilliant Brainwashing on Planet Trip which I’m so excited to hear, shout out to Burry. Oh god there’s definitely more I’ve forgotten about but I’ll stop there :)
