‘Triple Vision’ 24.09.24 featuring Bill Anthony Q&A + Mix

Bill Anthony, made up of selectors T.Bracey & DJ Silva AKA Junior Casual are a Naarm-based DJ duo on a mission to take you deep into the sub-aquatic realms of dance music. Their signature style is built on a shared love for all things deep and dubby, known for crafting sets which merge groovy-burners with hypnotic breakbeats & uncovered 90s house gems. Their sets are journeys into the unknown, where pulsating rhythms and atmospheric textures flow effortlessly together, creating a sonic pallet of late-night burner & low end ear worms.

We caught up with the boys to get an insight into the mix they have put together, finding creative inspiration & upcoming production projects on the horizon.

Q&A with Bill Anthony

Q1. Tell us about the mix you guys have put together. Are there any stand out tracks, artists or labels you are particularly digging at the moment?

W: This vinyl mix was recorded on a sunny but cold morning at Tony's place in Carlton North, Melbourne. Tony and I have been dj'ing together for many years around Melbourne under the "Bill Anthony" alias we decided on. Our usual method is to go to b2b, but for this mix we decided to do 30 mins each. I did the first 30 minutes and Tony did the next 30 minutes. We originally recorded a mix in a similar way about a week ago, but the file corrupted so we put this one together. My selections are deep driving and meditative records. I wanted the mix to be kind of ethereal but also with some energy, drifting off a bit in parts with swirling synths and then landing back with a dub techno chord stab or driving drum machine groove. The records I selected are a mix of new and older dub techno and tech house tracks.

T: We originally planned out a draft mix which we honestly never do and then after the technical issue. For the second attempt we decided to split the mix 30 mins each instead of our usual b2b. I decided to just grab a handful of mostly records I've had for a few years and learnt to DJ with and some more recent additions. Some real deep favourites that I don't usually get the chance to play out but I can see them getting some appreciation here.

Q2. What's something you have seen, heard or learnt recently that you have found inspiring?

W: Recently our friendship group has experienced a great loss. Inspiration can be elusive in such moments, but music really is a great way to find comfort and escape.

T: Well currently the seasons, seeing some brighter weather and watching some plants/bugs do their thing is always inspiring. Learning of Will's loss recently had us talking about what things in life truly matter so seeing my Mum after a while is always inspiring, She's lovely and has always had a massive love for reggae music which I absorbed growing up,

I blame her for my love of those sounds and I guess you can see that continuum in my half of the mix.

Q3. You have each been busy crafting some sonics in the studio under your individual projects recently, is there anything you can share about what sounds you have been cooking up and where/when people can check it out?

W: I have been making different electronic sounds over the years, exploring the different things that are possibile to do with drum machines, synths and samplers. I have got a few different projects going at the moment which I hope to have out into the world before summer arrives in Australia.

T: I have been messing around on an MPC at home for a while but with the help of some much more talented friends I've been able to put together a few tracks I'm happy with. I just uploaded a track to Bandcamp for the first time just for the hay of it. There will be some more things coming soon (as always).

Q4. What's something within a community you're a part of that you'd like people to know about?

W: The emergence of a global community who are willing to take to the streets and resist against the West's ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people is something everyone who cares about freedom and humanity should be aware and in support of.

T: 100% what Will said.
