Q&A with Cilla:
Q1: Was there a particular feeling, mood, artist or label that inspired your selections for this mix?
Cilla: It was probably a mix of inspirations. Lately, apart from listening to more immersive and introspective sounds (maybe to cruise through winter...), I have been enjoying the new local sounds and trends, and European techno from the last few decades, especially Italian hypnotic and atmospheric artists. The tracks by Donato Dozzy and Orion included in the playlist, are good examples. For this mix, I tried to create something that feels both meditative and rhythmic, while also breaking away from the traditional four-on-the-floor to shift the energy at times.
Q2: Tell us a bit about your artistic journey. What was the catalyst for you to make the leap from dancer to DJ and to continue diving deeper into radio & production?
Cilla: Both dancing and DJing are about connection for me, and I still enjoy being on both sides. But definitely, finding myself in the right environment was key. Moving between Spain, Italy, UK, and finally Australia introduced me to new collectives, parties, and sounds that were always inspiring. In Melbourne, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by curious friends who are now DJs, promoters, and producers themselves. They gave me the chance to experiment with their DJ setups and had the patience to listen to my early, rough mixes! Radio and production came naturally after that, as they are other beautiful ways to experience and share music and sounds.
Q3. As the DJ duo Olivas, with your partner in crime Modulor, how do you balance your individual tastes in music in playing a cohesive set? Is there much planning that goes into preparing for a set or do you both pack a bag of records and let the B2B magic flow?
Cilla: At the moment, our planning is pretty minimal, we’ve played together long enough to know each other’s tastes well. Apart from sharing the decks in different venues, we've also shared a house and lockdowns... which inevitably resulted in a few living room B2Bs. But most important, I think we both love the magic of B2Bs - letting things flow, enjoying each other’s tracks and building from there. It’s a different and very interesting way to tell a story together.
Q4. What's something within a community you're a part of that you'd like people to know about?
Cilla: Within the creative community, I've been supporting the production of a movie which hopefully will see the light soon! It's been the result of a great effort of emerging and incredible artists within the film industry over a long period of time, so I'm very excited as we’re getting into the final stages. Stay tuned, hopefully you'll hear some announcements about a film called 'Southerly' soon!
